Indigenous Peoples Emergency Response Actions against the COVID-19, Maji-moto, Narok County Kenya


Background

As of April 15th 2020, Kenya had reported 225 confirmed COVID-19 cases with a projection (from the Ministry of Health) of at least 10,000 cases by end of April 2020.

Close to, half of the 47 counties in the country have already reported positive cases of COVID-19. In response, the Government of Kenya has taken a number of drastic measures aimed at reducing the spread of the virus in the country.

ILEPA will implement the proposed project activities in consultation and partnership with the various actors, such as the government, within the project site so as to tap from their expertise, best practices and strengths, including avoiding duplication, wastage and in ensuring compliance with set government guidelines for sustainability. 

The project will endeavor to promote women and youth contribution and access to project-related benefits through engagement with community health volunteers who are mostly youth, including through use of social media platforms (WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, texting) to transmit COVID-19 related message to the community.


Project Objective

Address the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic within the framework of ensuring respect and protection of indigenous peoples’ rights and obtaining recognition and support for indigenous peoples’ overall health and development priorities.

Target Beneficiaries

The project targets Maasai pastoralists community of Maji-moto group ranch, Narok south sub-county in Narok county-Kenya. At least 40% of the 20,000 residents of the group ranch will directly benefit from the project activities. The needs of Women, Children, Elders, persons with disability and those in extreme poverty conditions will be prioritized. Specifically, 1,500 households comprising an average of 7 members each will be targeted for support during each of the two project months.
