Joint Indigenous Peoples and NGO Statement on the occasion of the presentation of the Report of the Office of the United Nations HighHRC logo

Statement to the Human Rights Council,
Agenda item 2
Thursday March 5, 2008

We, the undersigned indigenous peoples' organizations and support NGOs, welcome the report of the OHCHR on the relationship between climate change and human rights. It is a major concern for us that the close relationship between indigenous peoples’ enjoyment of their human rights and the wellbeing health of the ecosystems in which they live has to a very large extent been neglected in the international debate on climate change and strategies to mitigate and address its effects.

International Human Rights Day - A Sad Day for Indigenous Peoples

VTCIt is with great sadness that today, the 60th Anniversary of the adoption of the UN Declaration on Human Rights, some States have denied indigenous peoples of their rights at the 14th Conference of Parties of the UNFCCC.

NO RIGHTS! NO REDD!!

POZNAN, POLAND, 9 DEC. - At around 12:30 noon, a few of us indigenous peoples were standing in front of the Elk Room where the informal meeting of the Contact Group of the UNFCCC's SBSTA (Subsidiary Body on Scientific and Technological Advice) Working Group on REDD (Reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries) were meeting.

Resource Book on IndicatorsLaunched in November 2008 in time for the International Technical Workshop on Indicators Relevant for Indigenous Peoples held in Baguio City, Philippines on 17-19 November, this resource book hopes to encourage more people to contribute to the work of developing indicators relevant to indigenous peoples.
